What is

Feathering?

Feathering, otherwise known as microblading, is a form of cosmetic tattooing performed on the eyebrows where pigment is deposited into the skin using speciality designed hand tools and various needle configurations from 7 to 21 aligned in a single line formation placed onto the skin and pulled back in a slicing motion, similar to cutting an avocado, to place extremely fine and crisp strokes into the skin. This is then covered with a pigment mask to soak in. This technique has been used for thousands of years dating back to the Mayan empire and can easily cause scarring when performed incorrectly making future maintenance difficult.

The various configurations of needles allows us to artistically create very very fine to fine strokes into the skin replicating different thicknesses of your eyebrow hair for a natural looking healed result. Feathered eyebrows is rarely a method used alone today, for its adverse effects, but in combination with other cosmetic tattoo methods such as a combination eyebrow or hybrid eyebrow and using soft machine shading in between each manual stroke.

How is it

Done?

Feathered eyebrows can also be preformed with a machine and a needle differing from manual feathering as it deposits pigment into the skin swiftly using an in and out motion at up to 3000 times per second, similar to stiching, to implant pigment into the skin. This method is the preferred method of choice at By Louise Cosmetic Tattoo for its longevity in the skin, as well as, holding the skins integrity. Machine feathering appears more fluffy looking than a manually placed hairstroke would look initially, but over time ages gracefully and can be maintained for many years in the skin either manually or with a machine. In some cases machine feathering can also be used to cover up old and aged microblading.

Feathering lasts 6 months to 18 months in the skin when performed manually and 2-3 years when performed with a machine. Manual feathering should never cause scarring when preformed correctly. When performed incorrectly hair strokes will heal dark, thick and saturated lasting many years often with some degree of scar tissue making future cosmetic tattooing maintenance difficult.
